[ Maybe he should just kill her and save everyone the trouble. That'll put an end to her potentially hurting other people, and him having to worry about her. In some abstract, shallow sense, she understands why he seems to be compelled to help her. He's told her about their past. She's observed others — couples — behaving in a similar fashion. She can come to terms with that, make some sense out of the situation.

It's when they're together — even just like this, talking — that she struggles. It's... different, when he's around. When he's close. She feels. She wants. ]

Even if his time as Captain America hasn't been that long ( probably only a little longer than Steve by a little while, at this point ), he was also the best friend of the previous Captain America and a war hero, even with the views people might have on SHIELD and the Avengers and their involvements in certain disputes and the destruction that sometimes follows.
